What the list measures
An all-time money list adds up reported live tournament prize money and nothing else. Online winnings are not in it, cash-game results are not in it, and buy-ins are not deducted, so a player who has entered two hundred high-roller events can show a large total without ever having been ahead. It is a record of money received, not of profit or of current form.
It is also cumulative. No total ever falls, which means a rank can only worsen when other players pass it. Several long-standing British names now sit eight hundred or more places lower on the global list than their own best-ever position, having lost nothing at all.
The shape of the British list in October 2026
Stephen Chidwick leads with $79,927,052 — roughly double the second-placed total and more than twenty times fiftieth place. Below the top two the order is unstable, because one deep run in a high buy-in event moves a player several places at once.
The thresholds are worth knowing: a place in the British top forty takes a little over $4.1 million, and fiftieth place stands at $3,486,439. In the band from 28th to 50th, adjacent positions are frequently separated by less than the price of a single tournament entry — 33rd and 34th are $726 apart — so reading significance into one rank in that stretch is a mistake.
Three eras in one table
The Hendon Mob issues player numbers in sequence, which dates each entry. The British top fifty mixes numbers below 250 with numbers in the high six figures: the televised generation of the 2000s, the tour regulars who followed, and players who reached the same totals recently at modern buy-in levels.
The two groups built their money very differently. Most players in this part of the list owe forty to fifty per cent of their career total to one result. A few did the opposite — Ram Vaswani's largest recorded cash is about 6.5 per cent of his total, which means three and a half million dollars assembled from a long run of smaller finishes.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
The database keeps one combined United Kingdom list with each player's home nation recorded alongside, and separately maintains an England-only list. The same career therefore produces two different domestic ranks depending on which list is being quoted: Matthew Ashton is 46th on the combined list and 41st on the England one. Our pages use the combined United Kingdom rank and say where a different figure comes from.
Tax, in general terms
Gambling winnings are not subject to UK income tax, including for players who play full time, which is one reason British players feature heavily in international tournament fields. This is general information rather than tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the most successful British poker player?
Stephen Chidwick, from Deal in Kent, by career live tournament earnings — $79,927,052 on The Hendon Mob's United Kingdom list generated 6 October 2026, and by a very large margin over the rest.
Who are the top British poker players?
By the figures in our records: Stephen Chidwick, then Ben Heath, Sam Trickett, Talal Shakerchi and Sam Grafton. Below the top two the order shifts regularly, because one high-roller result can move a player several places.
How much does it take to reach the UK all-time top fifty?
Just under $3.5 million. Fiftieth place on the list generated 6 October 2026 was $3,486,439, out of 69,533 ranked British players; the top forty starts a little above $4.1 million.
Do UK players pay tax on poker winnings?
Gambling winnings are not subject to UK income tax, including for players who play full time. This is general information rather than tax advice, and anyone with an unusual situation should take professional advice.
Is online poker legal in the UK?
Yes. Operators must hold a UK Gambling Commission licence to offer poker to British players, which makes the UK one of the more straightforward markets in the world for a player.
Who were the famous British players of the televised era?
Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott, Barny Boatman of the original Hendon Mob, Roland de Wolfe and Liv Boeree were among the faces that defined British poker on television in the 2000s. All four are still on the UK all-time list.
What is a mixed-game specialist?
A player whose edge is in games other than No Limit Hold'em — Omaha variants, stud games, draw games, usually played as a rotation. Benny Glaser is the best-known British example, with multiple WSOP bracelets in those games.
