Marty Smyth from Belfast had one of the great runs of the poker boom. In April 2007 he won the Irish Open in Dublin for $867,545, in June 2008 he took the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha World Championship bracelet at the WSOP for $859,549, and in December 2008 he won the Sky Sports Poker Million for a cool $1,000,000, a year after finishing second in the same event. He also won the partypoker World Open in 2008. Third on the Irish all-time money list with more than $3.8 million in live earnings, he remains the only Irish player to have won both the Irish Open and a WSOP bracelet within the same eighteen months.
