World Poker Tour — Special Event: WPT Prime Taiwan · 15 Oct 2026

The WPT goes back to Taipei: NT$30 million guaranteed in a country with no casinos

WPT Prime Taiwan returns to Taipei from 2 to 11 January 2027, with the Championship on 7–11 January carrying a NT$35,000 buy-in and a NT$30,000,000 guarantee. The host is not a casino — Taiwan licenses none — but the Chinese Texas Hold'em Poker Association, and the WPT files the stop under Special Events rather than on the Prime schedule proper. Online qualifying runs to late December, with an identity-verification cut-off of 30 December 2026.

Taiwan is one of the more interesting places on the international poker calendar, because on paper it should not have one. The island licenses no casinos. There is no gaming floor in Taipei to put a WPT banner on. And yet the World Poker Tour is returning in January 2027, with a guarantee of NT$30,000,000 behind the Main Event.

The dates and the numbers

The WPT Prime Taiwan Festival runs from **2 to 11 January 2027** (UTC+8). The Championship — the Main Event — runs from **7 to 11 January**, with the first day starting at **12:00 GMT+8**.

The WPT's own event listing gives a buy-in of **NT$35,000** and a guarantee of **NT$30,000,000**. The operator selling online qualifiers into it prices the same seat at **US$1,100**, which is the number most international players will recognise.

The host is an association, not a casino

The venue is the **Chinese Texas Hold'em Poker Association** in Taipei. That is worth pausing on, because it explains the shape of Taiwanese poker rather than being an incidental detail.

With no licensed casinos, competitive poker in Taiwan runs through membership associations and clubs that present Texas Hold'em as a mind sport — a model that also underpins the amusement-club scene in Japan and the association circuit in parts of Asia. International tours that want a Taiwanese stop partner with those bodies. It means the festival environment is genuinely different from a Prime stop in a European casino, and it means the local legal framing of the game is doing real work in making the event possible at all.

It also puts Taipei on a short list of cities where a major-tour Main Event is played somewhere other than a casino.

"Special Event", not a Prime Championship stop

A detail that is easy to misread. The WPT's listing is titled **"Special Event: WPT Prime Taiwan"**, and the tour files it in its Special Events category rather than on the WPT Prime Championship schedule. So it carries Prime branding and a Prime-level buy-in without being a Prime Championship stop in the way the Cyprus or Las Vegas Championships are.

For a player, the practical consequence is mostly about expectations around field size and leaderboard treatment rather than anything about the poker. For anyone writing about it, the distinction is the difference between accurate and nearly accurate.

Qualifying online, and the deadline people will miss

WPT Global is running online qualifiers into the Main Event through to late December 2026. Two conditions on that route matter more than the ladder of satellite buy-ins:

- **Online qualifiers must play Day 1A or Day 1B.** Allocation is first-come, first-served and subject to availability, and if a preferred flight is full the organiser assigns an alternative. Qualifying does not buy a choice of flight. - **Identity verification must be complete by 30 December 2026.** A seat held by a player who has not finished verification by that date is removed, with no compensation and no substitute prize. That is a week before the Championship starts and it will catch people who leave documents until the new year.

Seats are transferable to another verified account holder, and a player who wins more than one seat uses the first.

Pairing it with Cambodia

The WPT's January is built for a single long trip rather than two. The tour's schedule puts the **WPT Prime Cambodia Championship on 22–26 January 2027** and the **WPT Cambodia Championship on 27 January – 1 February 2027**, both after Taipei. A player flying in from Europe or North America for a NT$35,000 Main Event has an obvious reason to stay in the region for three more weeks, and the gap between 11 and 22 January is wide enough to make that comfortable rather than frantic.

What we are not telling you

There is a promotional layer around this event — satellite price ladders, an on-site benefits card, outlast prizes and a hardware giveaway for deep finishers. Those are the operator's marketing, their terms change, and they are not what a tournament page is for. The dates, the venue, the buy-in and the guarantee above come from the WPT's own event listing and the operator's published specific terms, and those are the facts we will keep current.

Poker is entertainment. A festival in another country is a holiday with a tournament in it — budget it that way.

Frequently asked questions

When and where is WPT Prime Taiwan 2027?

The Festival runs 2–11 January 2027 (UTC+8) in Taipei, hosted by the Chinese Texas Hold'em Poker Association, with the Championship on 7–11 January starting at 12:00 GMT+8.

Why is a WPT event not held in a casino?

Taiwan licenses no casinos. Competitive poker there runs through membership associations and clubs that treat Texas Hold'em as a mind sport, so international tours partner with those bodies for a Taiwanese stop.

What is the deadline for online qualifiers?

Identity verification must be complete by 30 December 2026. A seat held by a player who has not finished verification by then is removed, with no compensation and no alternative prize — a week before the Championship begins.

Can a qualifier pick their Day 1 flight?

No. Online qualifiers must play Day 1A or Day 1B, allocation is first-come first-served and subject to availability, and the organiser assigns an alternative flight if the preferred one is full.

Which other WPT events are nearby on the calendar?

The WPT Prime Cambodia Championship on 22–26 January 2027 and the WPT Cambodia Championship on 27 January – 1 February 2027, both close enough after Taipei to make one Asian trip.
