Nine German casinos checked: one real poker game, and a whole federal state with none

We read the game-offer pages of nine German state casinos that were still missing from our venue map and found exactly one player-versus-player poker game: a daily Texas Hold'em cash table at Spielbank Kassel, 100-euro buy-in, blinds 2 and 4. Rhineland-Palatinate's three casinos — Mainz, Trier and Bad Ems — publish no poker at all, leaving the federal state without a licensed live poker game. Bad Homburg does list Poker, but its own page describes Ultimate Texas Hold'em played against the dealer, and its tournament calendar through December 2026 contains only roulette and Black Jack events. Three of Spielbank Hamburg's four houses are slots halls; the poker floor is at Casino Esplanade alone.

A German casino listing "Poker" on its website tells you less than you would hope. Over the course of one afternoon we read the published game offer of nine houses that our venue map had not yet covered, and the results were lopsided enough to be worth writing down.

One genuine poker game

Spielbank Kassel, in the Kurfürsten Galerie arcade in the city centre, deals the real thing. Its own Live Games page names Texas Hold'em as the poker form and puts a cash game on daily from 20:00 with a buy-in of 100 euros and blinds of 2 and 4 euros. Live play as a whole starts at 19:00. That is the entire poker offer — there is no tournament calendar — but it is poker between players, and in a country where the live game has thinned out considerably it deserves to be known.

The same company runs Spielbank Bad Wildungen, 40 kilometres away in a spa hotel, and that house's games menu has exactly one entry: slot machines. No live tables at all.

Rhineland-Palatinate has no poker

The state's three casinos are Mainz, Trier and Bad Ems, operated together. Mainz publishes slots, Black Jack and roulette. Trier and Bad Ems publish slots and roulette. Not one of the three lists poker in any form. A player living in Mainz or Koblenz has no licensed casino poker game anywhere in their own federal state and has to cross into Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia or the Saarland, or over the border to Luxembourg.

The operator makes a second point on its own front pages that is worth repeating: the Mainz, Trier and Bad Ems casinos run no online game and no app, and fake social media profiles using the Spielbank name and logo are circulating. Guests are told not to send money to them.

That warning holds for websites too. Two of the most obvious domain names built from the Saarland state casino's name currently serve offshore online casino promotions — welcome bonuses, free spins, cryptocurrency deposits — and have nothing to do with the state casino whose name they carry. Anyone searching for a German Spielbank by typing its name into the address bar should be aware of that. We could not reach the Saarland operator's actual site during this check and have left its houses unpublished rather than guess.

Bad Homburg's poker is the house's game

The François-Blanc-Spielbank in the Bad Homburg Kurpark is one of Germany's historic casinos and it does have a Poker page. What that page describes is Ultimate Texas Hold'em, played, in its own words, "gegen die Bank" — against the dealer. One raise per hand, a 4-euro minimum on Ante and Blind, a 500-to-1 top payout, an optional Trips side bet and a separate 2-euro jackpot wager paying 600 euros for a straight flush and 200 for quads. The casino states a return between 96.5 and 99.14 per cent depending on how you play, and 89.89 per cent on the jackpot.

Its tournament calendar for the rest of 2026 confirms the picture. There is a roulette tournament from 19 to 22 October with the semi-final and final on the 25th and 5,000 euros in prize money, the Black Jack 1,000er on 11 November with 28,000 euros total and a 28-player cap, and monthly Black Jack tournaments in the slots area. No poker event at all.

This is the single most common trap in German and Austrian casino research, and it is why we check every house against the question of whether players are playing each other or the bank before we call something a poker room.

Hamburg: four houses, one poker floor

Spielbank Hamburg operates Casino Esplanade, Casino Reeperbahn, Casino Mundsburg and Casino Steindamm. Only the Esplanade has poker. The Reeperbahn house on Millerntorplatz publishes slot machines and jackpot meters and nothing else; Mundsburg and Steindamm are daytime slots halls open from 10:00 to 24:00. On each of the three pages the line about classic play starting at 17:00 belongs to a promotional card for the Esplanade, which is an easy thing to misread.

Where Hamburg's poker is concerned the group is clear: Texas Hold'em and Omaha, played between guests, with the Omaha requirement that exactly two hole cards and three board cards be used. Cash-game seats are reserved by telephone or at reception, daily from 12:00 and no more than seven days ahead.

What this adds up to

German live poker is concentrated in a handful of places — the Bavarian state circuit, Spielbank Berlin's daily schedule, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, Baden-Baden, Schenefeld, the MERKUR houses in the west — and almost absent elsewhere. Nine houses checked, one cash table found. Publishing the empty results is as useful as publishing the full ones, because the trip you do not take is worth as much as the one you do.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the nine casinos checked deals real poker?

Only Spielbank Kassel, with a daily No Limit Texas Hold'em cash game from 20:00, a 100-euro buy-in and blinds of 2 and 4 euros.

Is there live poker in Rhineland-Palatinate?

No. The state's three casinos — Mainz, Trier and Bad Ems — all publish game offers without poker.

Why does a casino list Poker if players cannot play each other?

Because Ultimate Texas Hold'em and similar house-banked variants are also called poker. The player bets against the dealer and the casino takes the other side of the wager rather than a rake from a pot.

Which Spielbank Hamburg house has the poker floor?

Casino Esplanade. Casino Reeperbahn, Casino Mundsburg and Casino Steindamm publish slot machines only.
