When a casino lists "poker", check who you are playing against: two checks, two different answers

Two European casino groups were re-read on their own pages this week. Platinum Casino in Bucharest advertises poker prominently and its own page says the player plays only against the dealer. Spielbank Hamburg, by contrast, deals genuine player-versus-player cash games seven nights a week — and publishes no tournament at any of its four houses. Neither fact is visible from a casino's game list.

A casino game list with the word poker on it tells a travelling player almost nothing. Two checks made this week, both read on the venues' own pages rather than on an aggregator, came back with opposite answers — and in each case the answer was not what the headline game list implied.

Bucharest: the poker is against the dealer

Platinum Casino on Calea Victoriei is one of only two licensed casinos in Romania, and it advertises poker prominently — a "best poker table experience", a VIP poker club. Its own poker page is more precise. It describes its Texas Hold'em as the Ultimate variant and states that the player does not compete against other players but plays only against the dealer. Next to it the page lists Three Card Poker and Caribbean Stud Poker, both dealer-banked card games, and the site's tutorials cover those same three.

Nothing a poker room would publish appears anywhere on the site: no cash-game blinds, no table stakes, no tournament schedule, no rake or seat charge, no count of poker tables.

The licence category points the same way. Romania issues poker-club licences as a class of their own, separate from casino licences, and this operator holds a casino licence valid to September 2029 and no poker-club licence. House-banked card games are what a casino licence covers.

Two games on the page, Omaha and Chinese Poker, are named without saying who the player plays against, and one section is unfinished, so a real game is unconfirmed rather than ruled out. But a player flying to Bucharest for a cash game should not book on the strength of the word.

Hamburg: real poker, and no tournament anywhere

Spielbank Hamburg is the reverse case. Its Casino Esplanade poker floor runs genuine player-versus-player cash games — the house's published rules describe two to ten players against each other with a rotating dealer button — seven nights a week from 18:45, at €5/€5 or €5/€10 with a €200 or €500 table stake. Wednesday is Pot Limit Omaha; the rest of the week is No Limit Hold'em and No Limit Omaha.

What Hamburg does not have is a tournament. Re-read on 16 October 2026, neither the poker floor listing nor the group's own events calendar — which runs to the end of November and carries concerts, a Halloween party and a salsa night — contains a single poker tournament. Across all four Hamburg houses, no tournament schedule is published at all. The group's bookable "Private Poker" session for groups of six to ten is currently listed as unavailable.

For a city of Hamburg's size that is a genuine surprise, and it is the kind of thing only a direct read turns up. A tournament player heading north is better served by Casino Schenefeld, immediately outside the city boundary, or by Berlin.

The practical test

The reliable question is not whether a casino lists poker. It is whether the venue says who the player is playing against, and whether it publishes the things a poker room has to publish — blinds, a table stake, a start time, a rake or seat charge, a tournament schedule. A venue that has a poker room says so in that currency. A venue that lists poker and publishes none of it is usually describing a game against the house.

It is worth checking before travelling rather than after. A dealer-banked card game keeps a fixed mathematical margin on every hand and has no opponents to outplay, which makes it a different activity from the one most people mean by poker.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell whether a casino has a real poker room?

Look for what a poker room has to publish: blinds, a table stake, a start time, a rake or seat charge, and a tournament schedule. A venue with a real room states those. A venue that lists 'poker' and publishes none of them is usually describing a dealer-banked card game.

What is a house-banked poker game?

A card game played against the casino on a fixed paytable — Ultimate Texas Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Caribbean Stud are the common ones. The house keeps a mathematical margin on every hand and there are no opponents, which makes it a different activity from conventional poker.

Does Platinum Casino Bucharest have a poker room?

Not on its own published information. Its poker page says the player plays only against the dealer, not against other players, and no blinds, table stakes or tournament schedule appear anywhere on the site. Two games are named ambiguously, so a real game is unconfirmed rather than excluded.

Are there poker tournaments in Hamburg?

None published. Re-checked on 16 October 2026, neither the Casino Esplanade poker floor listing nor the group's events calendar shows a poker tournament, and none of the four Spielbank Hamburg houses publishes a schedule. The cash games run nightly.
