Poker in Macau: casino poker rooms, the law and playing online
Macau is the only place in Greater China where casino gambling is legal, and for a decade it was the centre of Asian poker: the Macau High Stakes Challenge, the APPT Asia Championship of Poker and Triton's early stops all played here, and the private games in the city's VIP rooms became legend. The scene has shrunk since 2020, but Macau still has a proper casino poker room and remains the destination for players from Hong Kong and the mainland. Online poker is another matter.

Is poker legal in Macau?
Live casino poker is legal and regulated by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) under Macau's gaming law, which licenses six concessionaires to run casinos. The minimum age for casino entry is 21, and this applies to locals and visitors alike. Online gambling is a different story: Macau has never licensed online casinos or poker, operating an unlicensed gambling business is an offence, and the position of residents playing on offshore sites is unregulated rather than expressly permitted. The gaming law is aimed at operators, and there is no record of players being prosecuted for online poker, but there is equally no licence protecting you. This is general information, not legal advice.
Live poker in Macau
The Wynn Macau poker room is the established venue and has run continuously through the changes of the past few years. The PokerStars LIVE room at City of Dreams, once the region's busiest, closed in 2020, and the number of tables citywide is a fraction of the peak. Tour stops still visit, and the Lisboa Hotel & Casino appears in the databases with its own money list, but if you plan a poker trip check the current cash-game schedule first. High-stakes private games continue in the resort VIP areas by invitation.
Online poker for Macau residents
WPT Global lists Macau among the markets it serves, and Natural8 also accepts Macau players. GGPoker's main site does not. Deposits usually run through e-wallets or crypto. Macau does not tax gambling winnings.
Macau's players
Macau's own player pool is small compared with its neighbours. Dong Hyun Kim leads the territory's all-time money list with about $1.4 million, and Lo Shing Fung, who finished fifth in the €100,000 Super High Roller at the 2014 EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final, is second with about $1.4 million. Many of the region's stars live in Macau while representing Hong Kong or Taiwan: Daniel Chi Tang and Pete Chen among them.
