Thin value

Betting a hand that is only slightly better than the hands the opponent will call with. Extracting thin value is a hallmark of strong players.
Example. Betting a third of the pot on the river with A-9 on an ace-high board, hoping to be called by A-8 or A-7.
A thin value bet is right when the opponent calls with enough worse hands to make it profitable, even though you sometimes get called by better. It requires an accurate read of their calling range and a size small enough to be called. Against a nit, thin value evaporates; against a calling station it is where the money is.
