Putting chips in the pot in more than one motion without first announcing the total amount. Under standard rules only the first motion counts, so a string bet becomes a call rather than a raise. The rule prevents players from reading reactions between motions.

Example. He put out a call, then reached back for more chips — the dealer ruled it a string bet and only the call stood.
