Overbet
Also: overbetting, over-bet
A bet larger than the size of the pot. Overbets are polarised by nature and are used to extract maximum value from the nuts or to put maximum pressure on a capped range.
Example. On a K-8-3-2-J board the pre-flop raiser bets twice the pot on the river with either K-K or a missed A-Q.
Solver work made overbets mainstream. They shine when you hold the nut advantage on a board that has not changed the ranking of hands, and when the opponent's range is capped. Common sizes are 125%, 150% and 200% of the pot, and all-in. The defender must call with roughly a third of their range against a 2x overbet, which is uncomfortable when that range is all one-pair hands.
