Capped range
Also: capped
A range that, based on previous actions, cannot contain the strongest possible hands. A player who just called a raise pre-flop is often capped because they would have re-raised with aces or kings.
Example. The big blind check-calls the flop and turn on a board where any set would have raised; on the river they are capped and face an overbet.
Being capped is dangerous because an opponent with an uncapped range can bet big knowing you rarely have the nuts. Good players keep some strong hands in their passive lines — slow-playing a set, or flat-calling aces sometimes — precisely so their ranges are not capped. Solvers call this 'protecting your checking range'.
