Balance

Also: balanced range, balanced strategy

Having a mix of strong hands and bluffs in the same line so that an opponent cannot tell which one you hold and cannot profitably always call or always fold.

Example. A player who only ever overbets the river with the nuts is unbalanced — anyone paying attention simply folds.

A line is balanced when the ratio of value to bluffs makes the opponent indifferent. On the river with a pot-sized bet, roughly one-third of your betting range should be bluffs, because the opponent is getting 2-to-1 on a call. Balance matters most against good opponents who will notice patterns; against weaker players, being unbalanced in the direction they fail to punish is more profitable.
