Poker in Vietnam: online rooms, poker clubs and the law
No country in Asia has risen faster in poker than Vietnam. Nguyen Le won the $50,000 High Roller at the 2025 WSOP, Khoa Anh Ngo took a Triton title in Jeju in September 2026, and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have busy poker clubs. The law, however, has not caught up: gambling remains illegal for Vietnamese citizens outside narrow pilot schemes, and no online poker site is licensed. This page explains both sides.

Is poker legal in Vietnam?
Gambling is prohibited for Vietnamese citizens under the Penal Code, and organising gambling is punished more severely. Casinos exist but are licensed for foreign passport holders; a pilot scheme that has allowed qualifying Vietnamese citizens into the Corona Casino on Phu Quoc has been the one exception. Poker occupies a special niche: it is recognised as a sport of skill by the Vietnam Bridge and Poker Association, and clubs in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang run tournaments under that sporting umbrella. The distinction is thin, and police have raided clubs that were judged to be running cash gambling. Online poker on offshore sites is illegal for citizens, although prosecutions of individual players are rare. Playing from Vietnam is therefore at your own legal risk. This is general information, not legal advice.
Live poker in Vietnam
The Triton Super High Roller Series came to the Hoiana resort near Hoi An in 2023, where Minh Phu Dao won the $50,000 event in front of a home crowd. Tour stops such as the Asian Poker Tour and WPT-branded events have visited Ho Chi Minh City, and the club scene in the two big cities offers daily tournaments. Foreign visitors can also play in the integrated resorts that hold casino licences.
Online poker for Vietnamese players
GGPoker and WPT Global list Vietnam among their markets, Natural8 has Vietnamese-language support and a large player base, and CoinPoker is a crypto-only option. Deposits normally go through e-wallets or crypto rather than Vietnamese bank cards. Vietnam taxes prize winnings above a threshold as personal income, so large scores can in principle be assessable; the practical position for offshore online winnings is unclear and worth professional advice.
Vietnam's players
Nguyen Le of Ho Chi Minh City leads the all-time money list with about $5.7 million after his $2.69 million WSOP $50,000 High Roller win in 2025. Khoa Anh Ngo of Hanoi, ranked in the GPI top 40, won the $25,000 Triton Golden Decade in Jeju for $1.09 million in September 2026, and Minh Phu Dao remains the home hero of Triton Vietnam.
